What are Nearly Zero Energy Buildings?

Arising from the Recast (EPBD) European Performance of Buildings Directive 2010/30/EU, from January, 1st 2020 every new public building will have to be designed to nearly zero energy building standards. Also, all other new buildings will have to comply with the new nearly zero energy buildings standards from January, 1st 2021. The official Irish definition of Nearly Zero Energy Buildings is here.

What are Open Doors events?

In 1998 a Belgian company, Bond Beter Leefmilieu (BBL) developed the concept of “EcobouwersOpendeur” to inspire builders and home owners to build and renovate their houses to a high energy standard. With more than 33,500 visitors over the past 15 years, Ecobouwers Open Doors Days has built a steady reputation as the biggest independent and non-commercial open house event in Flanders. In 2012, more than 3,500 visitors were welcomed at 156 low energy houses.

European-wide Open Doors Events in 2013 and 2014

Under the framework of the Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE) programme, BBL has joined with organisations in 9 member States to develop similar Open Doors events under the common name of NZB2021 ‘Doors Open Days’. Events will be organized in 2013 and continue in 2014 enabling members of the general public and building professionals visit new and refurbished houses and public buildings, highlighting nearly zero energy standards. Energy Action is co-ordinating the Irish NZEB Open Doors campaign. NZEB Open Doors events will similarly be taking in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Hungary, Malta, Poland, Slovenia and Sweden.

Get involved in our 2014 campaign!

The organisation of the this year campaign is now underway. There are many ways to get involved in the campaign, from partnerships, through participation in exhibitions, to sponsorship of activities and opening of your doors to visitors if you own or manage a low energy building.

  • If you are the owner of an NZEB / low energy / passive house, join the campaign by registering your house or building as an exhibitor – you can decide when and how many visitors you will host
  • If you are a building professional and have a portfolio of NZEB, low energy, passive or energy plus house designs or constructions, please share your projects with us and we can guide you as to how to have your projects included in the NZEB Open Doors event
  • If you are a national, regional or local decision maker, please assist us by passing on details of the NZEB Open Doors Ireland events to as many people as possible and please visit the exhibitor buildings yourself
  • If you are an NGO active in the field of sustainable buildings development, please join our initiative. By combining efforts, we can reach higher audience levels.
  • If you are a supplier of low energy building products or technologies, please contact us to talk about how you could get involved in the campaign.
