Meet Our Directors

David McCarthy

David is Executive Vice-President, Deputy Chief Financial Officer at Great-West Lifeco Inc. He previously was the Financial Director of Irish Life Group and before that Financial Director of Irish Life Permanent. He also worked with Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in Ireland and the UK. A business school graduate of Trinity College Dublin he is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants, a Fellow of the Institute of Bankers and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts. He is a former non-executive director of Alcatel (Ireland) Limited, Software Resources Limited and Crampton Housing Limited.  He is a director of a number of companies within the group including the associated company Allianz-Irish Life Holdings PLC.

Frank McDonald

Frank is a former Environment Editor of The Irish Times. He is an author of several books, including The Destruction of Dublin (1985), the city (1989) and The Construction of Dublin (2000) and joint author of Chaos at the Crossroads (2005) and The Builders (2008). A regular contributor to radio and television programmes, he won the Outstanding Work in Irish Journalism award in 1979, the Lord Mayor’s Millennium Medal (1988), Chartered Institute of Transport Journalist of the Year (1998), two ESB National Media Awards (1999 and 2003), a Lord Mayor’s Award (2003), Honorary DPhil, Dublin Institute of Technology (2006) and honorary membership of the Royal Institute of the Architects of Ireland (2010). He was also a Press Fellow at College, Cambridge, in 2008.

Tom Rowley

Tom has been a director of Energy Action since 2003. He is a graduate of Trinity College Dublin and qualified as a solicitor in 1998. Tom is a partner in the Law firm of Doyle Associates Solicitors in Rathfarnham village and has extensive experience in the area of commercial conveyancing and family law.

Carol Pemberton

Carol was Executive Director – Corporate Resources for Irish Life managing the HR and Facilities functions across the group until her retirement at the end of 2013. In her 37 year career in Irish life she undertook a variety of roles in the areas of HR, Customer Service and Information Technology. She has a masters degree in Organisational Behaviour from Trinity College. Carol was a member of the Board of Directors of Age Action Ireland from 2007 to 2011 taking on the role of co-chair from 2009 to 2011.

                      Barry Walsh

Barry is an accountant and an employee of Irish Life since 1984. He has been Company Secretary at Irish Life Group Limited and Irish Life Assurance plc since 2012. He has held senior executive positions in Irish Life and was General Manager of Group Tax and Investor Relations. Barry was an Inspector of taxes in the Revenue Commissioners. He serves as Chairman of Irish Life Staff Pension Scheme and is a Director of Bord na Mona plc.

Brian McSharry

Brian was appointed CEO of Energy Action in January 2017. He has worked previously with the Department of Energy in a number of roles including energy efficiency, all-island energy market and strategic management. He holds a Bachelors degree in Political Science and a Masters in Policy Studies from Trinity College and was a voluntary member of the Board of Directors of Energy Action from 1995-2007.
